Everyone in This Bank is a Thief is book 4 in the hilarious Ernest Cunningham series by Benjamin Stevenson. As with the previous books in the series, I listened to the audiobook, narrated by Barton Welch.

I’ve spent the last few years solving murders. But a bank heist is a new one, even for me. I’ve never been a hostage before.
The doors are chained shut. No one in or out. Which means that when someone in the bank is murdered, everyone is a suspect.
- The Bank Robber
- The Manager
- The Security Guard
- The Kid
- The Film Producer
- The Priest
- The Receptionist
- The Patient
- The Caregiver
- Me
Turns out, more than one person planned to rob the bank today. You can steal more from a bank than just money. Who is stealing what? Are they willing to kill for it? And can I solve the crime before the police kick down the door and rescue us?
Another brilliant Ernest Cunningham adventure

Ernest Cunningham is a murder mystery writer, but more often than not, he’s busy being in the middle of a murder investigation, rather than writing one. As a writer, he tries to honour the Golden Rules of mystery writing and it always appeals to the mystery fan in me when he mentions well known mystery tropes and makes fun of them. The sarcastic humour in these books really matches my own, which is probably another reason I enjoy this series so much.
As the book got started, I wasn’t sure if it would be as good as the previous three, but then things started to ramp up quickly and I couldn’t look away. It was a bit chaotic, twisty, and definitely not what I expected. It was fantastic.
There were some things I worked out pretty early that turned out to be correct, and others that I thought I had figured out but where I was completely wrong. There were lots of red herrings and more than a few moments where I just burst out laughing. Ernest is nothing if not entertaining.
And also, how often does a book make you run to the internet to fact-check something? I had to pause the audiobook in order to google “Do pistachio’s spontaneously combust?” Seriously.
The audiobook is well worth it
This is one of my favourite series, and I choose to listen to it via audiobook because the narrator, Barton Welch, always does a fantastic job – he infuses the story with the perfect amount of seriousness, sarcasm, and humour. I think I would miss his inflections if I had to read the book on my own.
While this is the fourth book in the series, it can absolutely be read as a standalone (as can all of the other books), but you do get a little bit more background into Ernest if you read the books in order. I mean, the titles alone should be tempting enough:
- 1. Everyone in My Family Has Killed Someone
- 2. Everyone on This Train is a Suspect
- 3. Everyone This Christmas Has a Secret
This is currently one of my favourite mystery series and I can’t recommend it enough. I can’t wait for more Ernest Cunningham chaos!
