Grab your maps, your passport, some snacks and your sense adventure as we join Lara, Rufus, Barney, and all their friends for another incredible adventure. One that takes them to several countries around Europe!

The Adventurers are on holiday when Maye warns of suspicious activity in Paris. Join them as they race from the French Alps to the ancient ruins of Rome on the trail of a dangerous gang with a legacy of secrets.

A free holiday turns into a grand treasure hunt

The adventure starts off innocently enough. Lara, Rufus and Lara’s friend Daisy, are hanging out together when they’re told that Lara and Rufus’ uncle won a trip to Portugal that he refuses to go on. Instead, their friend Tom and Tom’s mom will be going on the trip. The kids convince Lara’s mom to take Tom’s place on the free flight and the kids will join the moms in Portugal, making their way there with their uncle Logan and his girlfriend Dee in a … let’s call it a barely road-worthy van.

Of course, as they’re making their way to Portugal, the kids get a call from their friend Maye, who’s in Paris with her older brother Karim. The group agrees to meet up in Paris, especially after Maye tells them that she’s been following around some suspicious looking characters. When the gang arrives in Paris, they try to convince Maye that she’s just being paranoid, but things get serious when Karim is kidnapped by the same people that Maye has been keeping an eye on! Let the chase begin!

What follows is a fast-paced race across Europe – through the French Alps to the Vatican – as the Adventurers try to rescue Karim, solve the clues to a treasure hunt and avoid being captured by a notorious and dangerous gang.

It’s another epic adventure

As an adult reading this Middle Grade story, you do have to suspend your belief a little bit. There’s absolutely NO WAY that a group of young kids, with their hapless Uncle Logan in tow, could do even a smidgen of the things that this group gets up to – driving around Europe, racing snowmobiles across the Alps, fighting off dangerous gangsters – but honestly, who cares? The series is SO MUCH FUN. These are the types of books that will instill a sense of adventure and imagination and encourage a love of reading.

I think that kids will love this book – the characters are fun (four books later and Rufus is still my favourite) and their adventures are exactly the type of shenanigans that kids dream of having. The group is bigger than ever, and has expanded to include Lara’s friend Daisy and Karim’s little sister Maye, both of whom we met briefly in previous books.

Also, there’s Portuguese custard tarts – pastéis de nata – which are one of my favourite things ever! As Uncle Logan says, “They’re a Portuguese speciality. I could eat ten of those right now.”

The writing is easy for the Middle Grade set to follow along with and the action is paced quickly enough that they won’t lose interest in the story. There aren’t really any lulls in the fun and it’s nice to bring back recurring characters.

The Adventurers and the Continental Chase can easily be read as a stand-alone but I highly recommend that kids (and adults) pick up the rest of the books currently availably and enjoy the series from start to finish. You can read my reviews of the other three books here: The Adventurers and the Cursed Castle, The Adventurers and the Temple of Treasure and The Adventurers and the City of Secrets.
