A TV show has turned into a dangerous game … can six young challengers succeed against the odds?

Join Lara, Rufus and the gang on their most perilous adventure yet. Travelling across the Costa Rican rainforest, they must stay ahead of menacing TV executives and elite adventuring teams from around the world. The race is on to discover Teo’s treasure, but the jungle has obstacles to overcome!

It’s another stunning quest for our young adventurers!

When their uncle Logan shows up on their doorstep, Lara and Rufus know that they’re in for another grand adventure. This time, Logan has entered a team in a new reality television show – he just hasn’t told his new teammates yet! We all know that Lara and Rufus would never turn down the chance to travel to Costa Rica and go on a treasure hunt but can they just have to first convince Lara’s mom to let them go? She eventually relents, but with a caveat – she’s going with them! Rounding out their team are their friends and fellow past Adventurers, Maye, Tom and Daisy. Plus Lara’s loyal dog Barney and Logan’s long-suffering sometime girlfriend Dee are also along for the ride. With a team like that, can they possibly lose?

The show that they’ll be competing on follows several teams as they race around the jungle, solving puzzles, looking for clues and hunting for a ‘hidden’ treasure. Since it’s a reality show, there’s stiff competition in the form of other treasure-hunting teams. I found the reality show component to be a fun addition to the series, along with the exotic new location, the first one outside of Europe. The whole thing has an Amazing Race TV show, but with a treasure at the end as an added incentive (which I guess The Amazing Race does too since the teams are competing for prizes).

While we know that the young competitors will be able to hold their own against other, much older (and possibly more experienced) teams, they definitely have their work cut out for them. As they advance further into the competition, they start to find that things are not all what they seem with the television crew, plus dangerous things start to happen, both to the Adventurers and the other teams. There’s definitely more than a TV-treasure on the line!

The Adventurers continues to delight

If you’ve been reading my blog, you’ll know that I absolutely adore this series. It’s not only a fun read, but it exposes kids to a lot of different places around the world, which is never a bad thing. It also teaches them different ways to look at a situation and the value of teamwork. It never feels like “learning” when the story is so action-packed, but even in the smaller moments, you’ll find subtle lessons like being kind and fair, even if it’s to a competing team. So while the situations that our Adventurers get up to are always a bit far-fetched for reality, the lessons that they (hopefully) impart to children are perfectly grounded in the real world.

As we’ve come to expect with the The Adventurers series, this book is very fast paced and there’s not much that slows down the action. There are riddles, puzzles and lots of crazy situation moments, which combines into a great story for the Middle Age crowd (and also for any age, to be honest). You will not find yourself losing interest or getting bored while reading this – it’s definitely a page-turner from start to finish. I finished this one way too quickly and am already looking forward to the next Adventure!

I can’t end this post without giving a special shoutout to the cover illustrator, Andrew Smith. Every time author Jemma Hatt announces a new title to The Adventurers’ series, I’m itching to see the new cover. His artwork is just brilliant and adds so much appeal to the books!
